ARTIST STATEMENT

An ineffable nuance, my work is a representation of both being black and woman. My paintings are an embodiment of my being, made through an expressionist mode to creating. I am a figurative/abstract artist who meditates on the idea of presence and perception. Constructing  a representation of my being; a glimpse of different experiences drifting in a gaseous state, occupying space. Disrupting and diversifying an institution not meant for me. Disturbing the flux, my work is made from a realm translated through my own experiences unpacking the phenomenon that is blackness.

These paintings are held in time and space, standing in their own dimension, existing parallel to ours. The environments I depict are created out of need, which makes space for dense emotions,  experiences, womanhood, and blackness. Through luscious materials, bold, high chromatic colors, and surface details; I am creating a visual language rooted in consciousness of self. My color palette seduces the viewers while bringing acknowledgment to the content. The juicy paint sits on top of the glossy substrate capturing and bounding what is depicted. The brush strokes are floating on the surface alluding to the whimsical dreamlike narrative, the figure painted understands their presence through means of abstraction the viewer is not able to see the raw nature of their being.
